Angus - Our weakness
Location is becoming even more important as in this increasingly
global economy the world is becoming a smaller place.
Our location determines our success in two ways:
- Our proximity to the source of the product we produce (Raw
materials)
- Our proximity to the marketplace to which we sell our products.
We must examine the following areas to identify how location
determines our success.
- Agriculture
- Industry
- Tourism
Agriculture
We are strong as we are well located to source our raw materials,
to produce a quality product grown or reared for the marketplace.
We are weak as we are not well located to our marketplace, produce
has to be transorted to the centres of population.
Farmers need a shop window to market their products, the well
attended and popular Farmer's Market has show the demand for their
produce.
We propose to provide a more permanent shop window
to market this produce, to proved support for the farming community
on a permanent basis.
Industry
We are not close to the source of our raw materials, we are not
close to our marketplace.
Traditional industries such as fishing, engineering and textiles
are reducing in number, fishing boats are being decommissioned,
traditional engineering / textile businesses are diversifying
and developing new products in order to prosper.
Industry in Angus is a challenge, Angus Council has done much
to promote industry, a new industrial park in Brechin, the construction
of advance units throughout Angus, which combined with low rates,
will hopefully attract business and create employment.
It's hard work, Angus Council are using their best efforts, however
the fact remains we are not perfectly located with regards to
industry.
We propose to provide a shop window for many of
these manufacturers on a permanent basis.
Tourism
Angus is both our raw material and our finished product it's
on our doorstep.
We do not have to worry about transport costs to the markeplace,
the problem which affects both Agriculture and Industry.
In the case or tourism the marketplace comes to us.
We have a main arterial roadway (A90) that cuts through the heart
of Angus and carries an average of 15,000 vehicles per day, with
30,000 people, a quarter of the whole population of Angus.
However we have to attract the tourists, attractions attract
tourists, and we have already established that we have the attractions.
But we need to do more.
We propose to provide the permanent shop window
tht Tourism in Angus so urgently requires.
